Historic Preservation
St Pete has a collection of neighborhoods with a sense of place. We want to preserve Historic Kenwood’s unique character.
HISTORIC KENWOOD was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. That area consists of 1st Avenue North to 9th Avenue North and from I-275 to 34th Street.
Since that time four additional overlays or Local Historic Districts (LHD) were created to provide extra protection from threats like demolition. The image below shows the boundaries of the National Register Districts (dashed line) and the four LHDs highlighted in yellow.
Benefits of historic designation include discourage demolition, encourage historic building reuse & sensitive renovation, ensure compatible new construction, increase property values, and maintain a cohesive sense of identity.

Styles of Homes & Kenwood Districts
Historic Kenwood has one of the largest concentrations of bungalows in the southeast US, but it is also full of other historic home styles. Some of those styles include tudor revival, minimal traditional, Mediterranean revival, prairie, ranch, foursquare, and Dutch colonial. There are also a high number of relocated houses, 167 dwellings in all.

Local Historic Districts (LHD)
Local designation provides a "tool" to help retain neighborhood character, keeping the neighborhood special and a desirable place to live. All exterior alterations need prior approval from the City’s Preservation office with a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA).
