Mural Program
-
DescripThe HKNA Mural Program is a facet of the Public Art Initiative that focuses on placing relevant 2D public artworks on surfaces such as fences, walls, and garage doors in the neighborhood.
-
There is a publicly available Request for Qualifications to which local artists can submit their portfolios. Artists who demonstrate proficiency in the craft of large scale painting are added to our Roster and are considered for projects. Emergent artists who wish to learn by assisting a professional artist are also encouraged to apply.
If you are an artist who would like to get involved, please fill out this Google Form
-
We are primarily utilizing privately owned surfaces at this time. There is a publicly available application, where homeowners can apply to participate in the program.

Homeowners can choose to finance their own project or ask to be considered for a grant to be provided by HKNA which can help or completely cover the cost of their murals. Grant funding is limited and determined on a case-by-case basis and is decided by a subcommittee of the Public Art Committee.
-
A grant-worthy site has a lot of public visibility, meaning it´s sizable, in an area with foot traffic, and free of obstructions. It should be a good surface for painting, such as a metal garage door, flat or semi-flat wall, or sturdy fence. We also ask if the building owner is open to creative freedom, allowing us to place community-relevant art in the space.
-
The Mural Committee selects 3 portfolios from the roster that are appropriate for the job, and the homeowner selects which artist's style they prefer. The portfolios do not have names, signatures, or other identifying factors, ensuring a blind-selection process.
-
All professional grade murals cost $20-50 per square foot. We estimate the costs of murals in the program at $20 per square foot, as they are typically ground level, do not require rental equipment, and employ local artists who do not require travel/room/board.
