In the early 2000s, Historic Kenwood began a transition from a neighborhood of mostly older adults to a home for younger families with small children who were attracted to the charm of the historic bungalows. In 2015 Kenwood Kids was established by the Historic Kenwood Neighborhood Association to give younger parents and children a way to meet and bond. The nationally-recognized free monthly event in the park for children and parents of young children has featured such events as growing container tomato plants, Halloween costume contests and a haunted pavilion, a homemade Kids Carnival, an annual Unbirthday Party to celebrate every child’s birthday, storytelling and sing-alongs, dancing, holiday caroling at a local nursing home – one year we even turned the park into a water playground! The success of Kenwood Kids in bringing children and parents together was nationally recognized by the Neighborhoods USA organization in 2016.
